Founders Day 2020
Founders Day has always been a special time for me. I enjoy celebrating our Sorority’s ritual and visiting with my Gamma Phi Beta sisters. I like to imagine what it would have been like to be there when Mary, Adeline, Helen and Frances decided to form our sisterhood. It was 146 years ago, and the Civil War was a not too distant memory. Women were unwelcome pioneers in the world of higher education. Some even said women did not have the intellectual capacity for a university education or that such an education would damage their fertility! Seeking the support and shelter of one another, our Founders formed Gamma Phi Beta in that hostile environment.
We are now in our own challenging time. COVID-19 has taken too many lives and the resulting economy has stolen our financial security. Many of us are isolated and unsure. We may not be able to hug a sister, but we can join together and support one another. Gamma Phi Beta survived two World Wars, the 1918 Spanish flu and the campus unrest of the 1960’s. Today we are called to address social justice, inclusion, belonging and equity in our culture and in our Sorority. What would Mary, Adeline, Helen and Frances do? They came together to support one another in difficult times. I invite you to come and stand in the shelter of our sisterhood this Founders Day. Join Gamma Phi Betas from all over Canada and the United States as we celebrate Founders Day on November 11th.
